By: The Mad Boxing Genius
I was told once by a friend of mine while having a discussion on heavyweight boxing years ago that fans of the sweet science will one day realize that they should have respected and appreciated then heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis while he was still active. Although Lewis was more or less dominant during his career and produced some of the most vicious knockouts ever seen in the ring, he was still classified as a safety first, scientific boxer – something the public was not always accustomed to seeing in the heavyweight division. And, we often wondered how Lennox Lewis would have faired against the all-time great fighters like Larry Holmes, Muhammad Ali or a primed Mike Tyson.
Since then, my friends’ words ended up being prophetic as today’s crop of heavyweight fighters have been deemed by the public and critics as average at best. Until Lewis adamantly stated that he will never come back under any circumstances a while ago, many were calling and speculating a Lewis comeback.
What we have been dealt with now in this age of heavyweights are the Brother’s Klitschko, big brother Vitali and baby brother Wladimir.
Many will say that the Klitschko brothers’ are just too big and strong for anyone to compete against them; however there is also a belief that the current contenders at heavyweight aren’t skilled enough, talented enough, athletic enough or tough enough in addition to the Klitschko’s physical dominance, to standout of the crowd. And with that said, people question whether the Klitschko’s are in fact that good.
Suffice to say, all of these questions have resulted in what fans of boxing do when there isn’t a current “golden era” in the original glamour division…reminisce about the good ‘ol days and some of the past era’s great heavyweights.
Well, there is good news for boxing fans who are just “buying their time” until the next golden era of heavyweight boxing because a re-telling of one of the most celebrated boxing heavyweight champions of all-time is coming soon. A huge 3-volume biography on Rocky Marciano called Redemption: The Life And Death Of Rocky Marciano is the newest boxing project by author John Cameron.
Although there is a great deal of information about The Rock’s boxing career, John Cameron tries to delve deeper into the man’s mind and soul and what motivated him and what made him tic! This was a man who made a life and career of proving people wrong and accomplishing feats he had no business even attempting. Why did he pursue boxing when he was not to? How did this undersized heavyweight become the champion of the world? How did he become the only man to hold the heavyweight title and go undefeated? Why did this great champion suddenly retire when nothing or no one could stand in his way?
John Cameron tries to find the answer to these questions and much more by going to those who would know best such as The Rock’s younger brother Peter Marciano and Rocky Marchegiano jr, the son of the legendary champion.
This detailed re-telling story with no stone unturned, promises to be a book like no other Marciano biography that came before it.
