I had the pleasure of covering the Tomasz Adamek vs. Kevin McBride fight card live, Saturday night at the Prudential Center. It was a terrific night of boxing. The stands where packed. Thousands, upon thousands, of loyal Polish fans where there to root on their man. Adamek passed his final audition with flying colors. In this 12 round decision, Adamek beat up a much bigger man. He did it so great skill and style. A 200 pound man, who moves his hands with fluid motion, and always seems to be out of range after he does his work is a rarity in the heavyweight division, Adamek is soooo pretty to watch, it hardly mattered McBride barely won a round.
The rest of the card featured fine young talent like Vinny O’ Brien and Sadam Ali. Two potential gems Main Events is moving along nicely. One of the great things about boxing is discovering young talent and watching them move up the ranks. Keep an eye on these two.
This weekends boxing action brought a bunch of upsets, as well as proved one thing. The more the expert’s thing they know, the sweeter it is when they are proven wrong. Take James Kirkland for instance. Here is a guy who was all but set to be slated for a fight with Sergio Martinez. Many people felt this would be a tough challenge for Martinez. While I never understood if this belief was a reflection on Kirkland, or Martinez, I did not much of a problem with it. Except for one thing.
How could so many people think Kirkland was ready for Martinez, but so sure Andre Berto did not belong in the same ring with Manny Pacquiao? I guess none of it matters now as chances of us seeing either fight is very slim. Although I would not be surprised if Bob Arum is phoning Team Kirkland as we speak. I am only half kidding. I truly believe if Arum wanted this fight, he would find a way to sell it. Arums tools would jump right on board and do their part to get the word out, and all of the Pacquiao freaks and zombies would find a way to rationalize it.
To be brutally honest, the best way Andre Berto can prove he belongs in the ring with the beloved Pac-Man is to lose his upcoming fight with Victor Ortiz.
Erik Morales also proved a lot of people wrong. Has he ever gained so much respect in any of his wins, as he did his last loss to Marcos Maidana?
What will happen first, the Presidential election of 2012, or the commencement of the Super Six Super Middleweight tournament?
The best thing about Mike Tyson playing with pigeons is the realization of how much star power this guy has. Marvelous Marvin Hagler was playing with pigeons long before Mighty Mike was the baddest man on the face of the Earth. However, unless you are a Marvin junkie, like yours truly, or remember the ABC piece showing Hagler breeding pigeons, prior to his defense against William “Cave Man” Lee, you would never know that. Tyson is just in a class by himself when it comes to star power. I bet you many people still think he is the heavyweight champion.
We have another great weekend of fight coming up. Predictions soon to come!
