Once again ladies and gentlemen as well as the scandalous and the trifling we are gathered here today to discuss the sport of boxing. As I bump vintage Reggie Noble lyrics that take me back to the days of my youth, watch as I switch up speeds like Bruce Lee riding a Fugee in the movies; as for boxing action this weekend or lack thereof luckily the boxing news never sleeps so we have lots to chat about at the water cooler come Monday morning right?
I stand corrected on two fronts you probably don’t have a water cooler at your work and even if you did if you were talking boxing standing next to it I am sure many people would report you to security. “Hi security I hate doing this but there is guy on the fourth floor standing by the water cooler talking about some Ghost from Ohio who won’t fight for 1.3 million dollars? I asked if anyone knew what he was talking about and Lloyd the grounds keeper who is retiring next week said he thinks that the man was talking about boxing, do people still do that? Does Mike Tyson still fight?”
Okay now we can start show without further ado this P”N”B will go fast so don’t blink.
Friday Night Fights action:
Art Hovhannisyan vs. Cristobal Cruz I thought was going to be a legitimate scrap with some good battling and I wasn’t wrong on that notion at all. The Armenian Art Hovhannisyan I believed would have eventually had his hand raise in the end with wounds from the bout since Cruz is a hard nose son of a gun. In the end however we were robbed of any fun outcome due to a nasty head butt Cruz suffered. Take nothing away from the former Champion Cristobal Cruz, he did come to fight and was prepared to gut it out and I do understand he was gaining momentum as each round past, maybe his experience would have been the ultimate factor to lead in him to the “W”. It’s moot unless we get a rematch which I will co sign and say let’s do it.
Let’s welcome Mike Faragon to the ESPN stage. This kid has got to get a FNF date for next season but I believe next time it’ll be in the opening slot and not a swing bout.
Someone please tell Sergio Mora he lost to Shane Mosley and Brian Vera! Just because you say something doesn’t change reality. Otherwise, I am the Lizard King I can do anything. (oh shoot maybe Sergio Mora is right)
I liked what I saw from Sergio Mora as an announcer more so than did as fighter in the Mosley fight! I want my $30 Latin Snake! Yeah I am looking at you. Old wounds my Latino hermano its ok just don’t pull that junk again.
As for the main event between Vernon Paris vs. Tim Coleman… the fight build up was hot as lava. So much beef between these two that Brazilian cattle herders were beginning to suspicious of their share of the market. Tim Colman went on record stating that Vernon Paris was a crack head who was blasting him on his Facebook page. So naturally Tim Coleman did what we would all do and go up to Vernon at the weigh-ins and cause some static. (Yeah buddy “Static” – 1992 vocab is in the house!) I gotta say I believed the anger in Colemans voice and how genuine the hatred sounded that it would drive him to a victory last Friday night.
But let’s be honest I haven’t been able to pick a fight in months even “Mush” from A Bronx Tale says any fighter I pick falls apart in the ring.
This fight was one of my favorite of the many placed on this FNF season. The action was solid and the trading between the pair was solely meant to hurt each other – nobody was pulling their punch’s that’s for sure. Even after the off balance knockdown of Paris I still wasn’t convince Tim was affecting Vernon Paris as much as the Detroit native shots were on Coleman.
The body shots were the ultimate factor and you don’t need me to tell you that if you saw the fight even bodies shot that landed on Coleman in the second round were effective and Paris simply exploited the weakness.
I still think both men have room to grow and both probably get more TV dates soon, which is fine by me. To be honest last I listed some opponent match ups for Mike Alvarado in last week’s P”N”B and I think I would add Vernon Paris to that list that would be a huge test for both men and the style match up wouldn’t disappoint.
As for Tim Coleman I don’t know exactly where he goes from here but a date in the ring seems fitting for sooner rather than later. I used to want to see a Tim Colman vs. Shawn Porter fight, I am not sure if Porter is beyond that now.
BTW: Where is Shawn Porter hasn’t fought since February what’s up with that?
As for Saturday we got to see Kelly Pavlik fight in his hometown of Youngstown Ohio against Darryl Cunningham. Oh Wait… no we didn’t actually now did we? No, Kelly decided to back out due to money rumblings.
One interesting point is Kelly claims he never has to fight again and that he is set for life. If that is the case then why squabble about the money to begin with and simply fight for your fans for one And for two, for your legacy ie: beating Lucian Bute (unlikely scenario) would be huge milestone in your career and set up even larger fights obviously.
Kelly Pavik was quoted as saying he would have fought for about fighting for 50k last Saturday and considered it be “peanuts” that means my current annual salary is around 115 sunflower seeds and two handfuls of pistachios or a Crown Royal Bag filled with almonds, either ways that’s still nuts! (First nut pun of week). Oh yeah and by the way don’t try to act like you are too good to use a Crown Royal Bag for something else we all do it!
Look everyone who is torching Pavlik for his crazy antics, and I am ok with that, but Divas do it in the music industry all the time and we give them a pass, we say well “they clearly are riding their previous accomplishments from years ago and believe their worth is yet the same. The sad thing is the world continues to spin with or without the “Divas” of the world acknowledging it.
Major Props goes to Alec Kohut who was able to cover the Pavlik incident and get the listeners of his Maxboxing East Coast Boxing Report radio show the story straight from the ghost’s mouth.
On that note a fight between Lucian Bute vs. Glen Johnson interests me more than one with Pavlik so I hope it gets made, if anyone deserves a million dollar payday it’s the “The Road Warrior”.
HBO wins the Manny Pacquiao sweepstakes, I am sure the fans of 24/7 will be happy, what I am real interested in is what other facets of the promotional deal we will see for this fight? Bob Arum did say that both deals from HBO and SHOWTIME were so close in a comparison he made his decision after executives from both networks were forced into a cutthroat death match of Paper, Rock, and Scissors. (bad jk)
I do think however SHOWTIME will land the Cotto vs. Margarito II fight and as they should and for what it’s worth it’s a solid consolation prize.
Since we are talking about PPV’s The Star Power fight card- I will be honest this has potential to be the best PPV this year, and in my opinion that award is going to so far was the Golden Boy “Action Heroes” fight card. But with Joseito Lopez vs. Vargas, Morales vs. Matthysse, Alvarez vs. Gomez and of course Mayweather vs. Ortiz. That’s an entertaining card hard to see that there could be a snooze fight on this list.
I really, really, really hope a fight with Ishe Smith and Peter Quillin pops off just as much as I want a fight between BJ Flores vs. Lateef Kayode to happen.
My KO of the week is a well put video from Blue Mercury- the coaster track is an oldie and I love it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=59PR4ZSPpf8&playnext=1&list=PLD80547CC9067F95F
Arizona Boxing Beat
As for all the fighters that gave it their all on Friday night at the Bad Boy fights, much respect due. No way am I lacing up gloves in 97 degree heat, all of you guys crazy I concluded crazy in a good way of course! Ricardo Marquez I knew was game as soon I saw his trainer Alan Viers in the corner. Daniel Arrellanis stole the show and had a huge fan base with him. Also did notice Tommy Martin and Pete Chavez working the corner for several fighters as well. Charles Albaugh fought with much heart and even in defeat gave it his best. I witnessed a bare knuckle fight that had a ton of body shots but ended with some clean hits to the chin. Bobby Gunn becomes a bare knuckle Heavyweight champion.
And my last note is here KO Boxing Gym in South Phoenix was hit by a storm pretty bad to point of needing to be rebuilt, I wouldn’t expect you to clean out your bank account, but maybe your couch cushions if you have the funds to spare, many local fighter call this gym home and every little bit helps get this kids off the streets and back in the ring. http://facetofaceevents.net/wp/
Alright folks let’s get ready for some Abner Mares vs. Joseph Abegko!
