By: “The Mad Boxing Genius”
This Saturday, October 15, 2011, the “Ageless Wonder”, the future hall of famer and the oldest man to ever win a legitimate world championship in professional boxing Bernard Hopkins, will once again try to defy the odds and solidify his greatness even further by taking on the young and former king of the light-heavyweight division, “Bad” Chad Dawson. Although this match-up may prove more intriguing than entertaining, the result of this showdown for the recognized light-heavyweight championship of the world will prove vital to the future of the boxing landscape.
Bernard Hopkins: The Man
Bernard Hopkins is a man that just won’t go away. Not quite the fighter he used to be when he dismantled the great Felix Trinidad in 2001 (arguably his greatest performance of his career), but he’s still proving to be on the top of his game and is still neck in neck with the sports’ youngest and best.
Bernard Hopkins Keys To Victory
Bernard Hopkins is one of the few older fighters’ that knows how to use experience effectively. He knows his body and understands in each fight he suffers from a physical disadvantage. He makes up for his shortcomings with mental warfare and by being choosy but accurate with his offence.
Bernard Hopkins Future
I suspect that the light-heavyweight champ (who can’t stand still – always needing something to do), will keep on going until he is defeated convincingly. There are many options for the ‘ol warhorse if he can find a way to defeat Chad Dawson this Saturday.
Bottom line, a victory over Chad Dawson keeps him in the drivers’ seat and he can more or less do whatever he wants. Although any talented young fighter in the division is expected to defeat Bernard Hopkins, being the one to crack the “Hopkins Code” will be a feather in anyone’s cap, regardless if Bernard Hopkins is 46 or not. There is Tavoris Cloud out there and despite the network issues, Lucian Bute still remains a viable option for the light-heavyweight king. A match-up with Lucian Bute at a catch weight of 170 pounds or even at the light-heavy limit looks to be his most lucrative option – and it could happen! Both men are fighting a less than a month apart from each other. Understandably, everyone wants to see Lucian Bute take on the winner of Showtime’s Super-Six World Boxing Classic Tournament but every competitor in the tourney has had a hellacious schedule. The winner would be entitled to a “gimme” fight and I would think that they would take it.
A loss won’t necessarily stop the “Ageless Wonder” from competing or getting another high profile fight if he doesn’t get beat convincingly. However, a convincing loss will more than signal the end of his illustrious career- even if he manages to manoeuvre his way into a rematch.
Chad Dawson: The Man
Chad Dawson, although not a draw in the sport of boxing, is young, tested and respected. He had and still has a lot of time to build himself up a loyal fan base, make some money and do some damage along the way. When he is on his game, he has all the skills in the world to defeat Bernard Hopkins and is one of the sport’s absolute elite.
Chad Dawson’s Keys To Victory
Chad Dawson has great technical skills, athleticism and he isn’t afraid to go to war when he has to. Unfortunately, in his last couple of outings, he’s had some mental lapses – almost appearing zombie like and bored. We wonder if Chad Dawson’s personal issues outside of the ring are taking its toll or if he’s starting to lose his drive. But if he is able to perform the way we know he can by getting his punches off first, throwing punches in bunches and keeps a fast and consistent pace, this should be a strong and solid victory for the man the call “Bad Chad”.
Chad Dawson’s Future
Despite some exhilarating performances, he just can’t draw a crowd. If you couple that with his last two performances, which has people talking about his mental/spirit for the sport, a loss will be very detrimental to his career. Not to say he can’t pull himself back up by the bootstraps but it’ll be quite a hole he’ll need to dig himself out of.
A convincing victory over the “Ageless Wonder” will raise his stock like never before because he cracked the code. However, he can’t afford any more performance problems regardless if he wins or loses Saturday night. From here on out, he has to be close to perfect.
I know we’ve been saying this for years, but Bernard Hopkins’ body has to give out some time. At age 46, his shelf life must be coming to an end sooner rather than later. I’m not sure what B-Hop’s continuous winning streak means…is he just a freak of nature or are our current crop of light-heavyweight fighters just not that good?
What about Chad Dawson? For someone so young and talented, he’s at a very significant crossroads. He’s got so much more to lose than to gain and he’s the challenger going in. He just can’t win, he must win convincingly. Bernard Hopkins has lost before but always with some controversy. The course that Chad Dawson is on now is a scary one for him. Anything less than beating up the old man will be considered disappointing.
In this fight we have a fighter with mental lapses and another fighter who’s almost 50 years old. If I said it once I’ve said it a million times… a fight more intriguing than entertaining!
